The Tasmanian Greens have warned the Abbott government not to push ahead with plans to rip up the recent World Heritage Area extension in Tasmania, saying it would plunge the state back into conflict.
Responding to reports in The Australian today, Greens Leader Nick McKim laughed off suggestions from Senator Richard Colbeck that the area is not of World Heritage value.
“The United Nations World Heritage Committee itself called for these extensions time after time over many years, and have determined that the area is of outstanding universal value to humanity.”
“The Greens will back in the Committee’s opinion over a Senator who simply wants to reignite the forest wars because it suits his political agenda.”
“Logging World Heritage forests will mean more conflict for the Tasmanian people, most of whom had hoped we had moved on from those divisive days.”
