… from Liberal Premiers
Premiers’ support for free vote welcomed
Marriage equality advocates have welcomed four Liberal state premiers throwing their support behind a federal Coalition conscience vote on marriage equality.
Barry O’Farrell, Denis Napthine, Colin Barnett and Campbell Newman have all urged the federal parliament to deal with the issue.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“If Coalition leaders as conservative as Colin Barnett can see the importance of a marriage equality conscience vote, Tony Abbott has no excuses.”
“With four Liberal premiers telling Tony Abbott that community attitudes are changing and a marriage equality conscience vote is a no-brainer he’d be unwise not to listen.”
The Liberal premiers’ support for federal action on marriage equality comes the day after the High Court overturned the ACT’s Marriage Equality Act and affirmed that the federal parliament has the constitutional power to enact laws for same-sex marriages, removing the question mark that hung over the constitutional definition of marriage.

CALL ON HODGMAN TO JOIN OTHER LIBERAL LEADERS AND BACK FEDERAL MARRIAGE EQUALITY FREE VOTE
Marriage equality advocates have called on Tasmanian Liberal leader, Will Hodgman, to join his interstate counterparts and back a federal Liberal conscience vote on marriage equality.
The call comes after NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell, Victorian Premier, Denis Napthine, WA Premier, Colin Barnett and Queensland Premier, Campbell Newman, all said community attitudes are changing and urged the federal Liberal Party to allow a conscience vote.
Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality convener, Andrew Badcock, said,
“We call on Will Hodgman to join the overwhelming majority of his interstate counterparts by supporting a federal Liberal marriage equality conscience vote.”
“This is an opportunity for Mr Hodgman to show that he is a compassionate conservative and not a hardliner.”
