Earlier this week I spoke to Dr Natalie Kringoudis Doctor of Chinese Medicine, acupuncturist, author, speaker and natural fertility educator.

Nat says she doesn’t get to Tasmania often,, she says it’s a beautiful holiday capital, and will be having one of those visits as part of her ‘debunking ovulation’ tour which has already had great success in Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane.

Natalie explains ovulation doesn’t always occur uniformly in all women and believing so is unreliable and shouldn’t be a gauge to predict fertility. Nat believes in a simple approach to understanding and boosting fertility and reminds us that stress may contribute to ovulation and fertility problems. This fact is demonstrated by the incidence of couples who believe they are infertile, going through the process of IVF only to later have a child without medical assistance.

Natalie says stress over fertility is often exacerbated by couples being told if they can’t have a child in one year its time to consult the IVF specialists. The stress related with this pronouncement of infertility actually might become a self-fulfilling prophecy as it has been noted that the body is very clever and in times of extreme stress one of the first systems it impacts on is temporarily shutting down the reproductive system.

Nat says you don’t have to have graduated from ‘the school of ovaries’ to understand fertility better. Nat also believes the pill can hinder fertility and although not the only explanation for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) (a disruption of ovulation), in some cases, the pill may lead to the condition.

The pill, Natalie adds has made women disconnected with their bodies. The hormonal imbalances it introduces masks women’s awareness of their bodies.

Natalie says couples who are concerned with infertility might become more informed about their use of the pill and if they wish might be directed to alternative approaches of acupuncture and herbal medicine to aid their fertility before embarking on IVF, which can be a stressful and expensive process and in many cases unwarranted,

Similarly, for those that are embarking on the journey of IVF, Natalie asks that they consider giving her 3 months to help them get in an optimum state of healthy, she sees no time wasting in the 3 months delay as it can possibly increase their natural fertility or if not at least they will be in the best possible preparation for the IVF procedures they will undergo.

Nat doesn’t blame the GP’s for people’s ignorance of simplicity in tackling fertility problems as GP’s are only going through normal protocols with their advice to patients but Nat only asks that people concerned with their fertility consider natural options as an alternative or coupled with advice from their GP’s.
