A group of altruistic Hobartians will be donning their funkiest threads and grooving to the best of 70s disco in the name of ending extreme poverty.
Members of RESULTS International’s Hobart group are hosting a 70s disco-themed fundraising dinner-dance on Saturday November 30 at Pepperz Restaurant, UTas.
RESULTS is an international non-partisan network of volunteers dedicated to generating the public and political will to end poverty.
Since 2008, RESULTS Hobart has raised over $70,000 to help the organisation continue its vital advocacy work, influencing policy that has the power to change lives across the developing world. Group members have also been influential advocates themselves, regularly writing to and meeting with MPs to discuss Australia’s role in ending extreme poverty.
The 1970s theme is significant, as despite our prosperity, Australia’s aid spending has dropped since 1970 levels. RESULTS Hobart volunteers hope to draw public and political attention to this trend and build support for increased aid spending.
“It is unacceptable that in 2013 kids can still die of preventable diseases and hunger, and we should be doing all we can as a nation to prevent these deaths,” says event organiser Mike Picone of Kingston Beach.
“We have seen in the Philippines that extreme poverty can be created in the blink of an eye. Poor infrastructure and malnutrition will mean the effects of the typhoon are felt for a long time, with people exposed to disease.”
“The good news is that since 1990, the number of people living in extreme poverty has halved, and the number of children dying of hunger has also halved. The end of extreme poverty is within reach.”
In Australia and across the world RESULTS is an active advocate for various health initiatives including The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. “Australia has spent $400 million on the Global Fund, but received back $4 billion in investment from the Fund in the Asia-Pacific,” says Group Leader Sarah Brinckman of Hobart, “that’s amazing return on investment, and one that is vital to continue.”
