Pigs Fly Pale Ale
Bowral NSW | 4.6% alcohol
With a name such as Pigs Fly, you’d expect a bit of a story behind the brand and there is indeed a reasonable yarn to tell. Its producer, Bowral Brewing Company in the Southern Highlands of NSW, was formed in 2004 by winemaker Joe Duncan and his mate Gav Fisher.
They originally wanted to use the name Pig’s Ear — rhyming slang for beer — but lost that one on trademark grounds. Staying with the porker theme and wanting to show that anything was possible, they opted for Pigs Fly, which for this old California country-rock fan is a bit reminiscent of The Eagles naming their comeback album Hell Freezes Over.
The beer shows classic golden amber pale-ale colour. There are some attractive lemon-zest aromas, hoppy rather than malty.
There’s a creamy mouthfeel in the middle of the palate, with an appropriate level of bitterness on the finish, cleansing the palate ready for another mouthful.Visithttp://www.pigsfly.com.au
