Old Speckled Hen Ale
Old Speckled Hen Ale
Abingdon, England | 5.2% alcohol
The name of this excellent English ale has nothing whatsoever to do with poultry. It’s much more to do with a car and local accent.
The beer was first brewed in 1979 to mark the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory. The workers there had an old MG Featherweight Fabric Saloon they used as a factory runabout which became spattered during frequent visits to the paint shop. The car became known as the “OwldSpeckl’d Un” and the rest is obvious.
This mid-brown/gold ale is rich and smooth and very much of the malty side, though there’s a refreshing lash of cleansing bitterness right on the finish.
As ever, don’t drink this straight out of the fridge. Let it warm up to something approaching cellar temperature to make the most of its fruity aromas and full palate flavours.
