I am an ex-Tasmanian residing in Calgary, Canada.

Some interesting research demonstrates that painted bike lanes (unless separated from traffic by shifting the parked cars as a buffer) are not safer than ordinary roads.

• Alderman Philip Cocker, in Comments: After extensive consultation Hobart City Council was proceeding to a separated cycleway for Sandy Bay Rd. It would have been an outstanding facility safe for all to use. Since a new Lord Mayor all that was scrapped for a third rate paint on road option. A great shame and the minority triumphing over the better community good.
