… to Festival of Roses Open Day at Woolmers Estate, Longford on Sunday November 17.
Before that, this fine veteran, still in entirely original condition, will be on loan from Woolmers
Estate, to be displayed as the window centrepiece at the National Automobile Museum,
Launceston, from 3-17 November.
Manufactured when Wolseley was at the height of its success, building 3,000 cars per year, the
car was shipped fully assembled to Australia, most likely not long before the outbreak of World
War 1 and the subsequent blockade that stopped exports from Britain for the duration of the war.
So, this 1913 Wolseley is very lucky to be here today to celebrate its grand centenary, which will
be part of the festive proceedings at this year’s Festival of Roses Open Day, at Woolmers Estate,
Longford, where there will be live music, food stalls, Children’s Choir, games and competitions,
crafts, cut flowers and rare plants, and of course, the stunning sight and fragrance of 5,000 roses
in full bloom!
Still Dashing at 100!
An Edwardian era advertisement for the British manufactured Wolseley has as its slogan
“The Car for Durability and Reliability”. This is certainly true of the Woolmers Estate
1913 Wolseley, in which its owner, then twenty-three year old Thomas E. C. Archer,
took his young bride on their 1915 honeymoon tour of Tasmania.
Today it is still in entirely original condition, including the tyres and its convex
windscreen, a real rarity. The ballerina, a whimsical adornment, is said to be modelled on
Frederick Wolseley’s grand-daughter.
This year Woolmers 1913 Wolseley celebrates its centenary in conjunction with the
Festival of Roses Open Day, Sunday November 17, at Woolmers Estate, Longford, just
20 minutes from Launceston.
