The Tasmanian Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson Cassy O’Connor MP today applauded the decision by supermarket giant Woolworths to phase out cage eggs, and urged other retailers to up the ante.
“It is great news for chickens and for consumers, and it will go a long way toward making Australia’s shopping trolleys more humane,” Ms O’Connor said.
“It’s caring consumers who prefer cruelty-free food who have forced this change, and today they should all be giving themselves a big pat on the back.”
“We are encouraging other supermarket chains like Coles to up the ante, and to announce an even shorter deadline for phasing out cage eggs.”
“A five year phase out is a good start, but all producers and retailers should be ready for consumers to demand a much faster implementation.”
“Thanks to the work of the Greens, Tasmania is well down the road to a cruelty-free egg industry.”
“The world wants clean, green and cruelty-free Tasmanian products, and our egg producers are already well ahead of the game.”
