The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the findings of the 2013 Tasmanian Bushfires inquiry.
Greens Leader Nick McKim said the Greens supported the Premier’s decision to accept all 103 recommendations contained in the report.
“The Greens want the community to have the comfort of knowing that our emergency services are fully prepared to respond in the event of a catastrophic bushfire,” Mr McKim said.
“The fires that struck Tasmania earlier this year tested our emergency services to the limit, and it is largely thanks to their outstanding response that no lives were lost.”
“There are always lessons to be learned after a disaster, and the Greens are confident that this report will go a long way to helping improve how we manage and respond to bushfire.”
“The challenge now will be to implement the recommendations in full.”
”The Greens will to do all we can to ensure that Tasmania continues to improve its bushfire management and response systems.”
“Bushfires are a part of life in Tasmania, and unfortunately the changes in our climate mean that major, catastrophic fires like those that struck Tasmania in early 2013 are likely to become more common.”
