Agricultural Producers In Limbo
The Tasmanian Greens Primary Industries spokesperson, Kim Booth MP, today called on the Minister for Resources to announce a clear timeline for a decision over Tasmania’s GE-free status, now that the public submission process has closed.
“The importance of Tasmania’s GE-free status is becoming increasingly clear,” Mr Booth said.
“More and more producers are coming forward to promote the importance of Tasmania’s GE-free status to their overseas and interstate marketing.”
“Those producers, who are crucial to the future success of agriculture in this state, should not subjected to any more uncertainty.”
“The Minister needs to announce a date for a decision, so that beekeepers, beef producers, wine-makers, fruit growers and other producers can plan their businesses accordingly.”
“While Minister Green has flagged he hopes to be in a position to inform the public by the end of this year, clearly producers need to know sooner rather than later.”
“The Greens are also urging the Minister to make Tasmania’s GE moratorium long-term, if not permanent, so that producers can enjoy the certainty they need to expand their businesses and grow jobs.”
