The Palmer United Party’s Jacquie Lambie has picked up Tasmania’s sixth Senate seat.
The Australian Electoral Commission confirmed the results this morning after preferences were distributed from the September 7 poll.
The race for the last seat had been too close to call.
But the former Army corporal prevailed with a margin of about 15,000 votes over Liberal hopeful Sally Chandler and Robbie Swan from the Australian Sex Party.
The mother of two lives in Tasmania’s north-west and was in Hobart this morning to wait for the results.
She says there will be little time for celebrations and she will spend the day pulling down her election posters.
• Tasmanian Times took a punt and advised its readers to meet Tasmania’s (likely) new Senator Here, Sept 8, then stuffed up by predicting victory for The Sex Party’s Robbie Swan Here, Sept 18, only to be roundly scolded by psephologist Dr Kevin Bonham, whose latest observations on the result can be found, Here

• John Hawkins, in Comments: Congratulations Jacquie Lambie. Will the Palmer United Party consider asking you to address Senator Abetz over his Channel Highway land deals. These are carefully and accurately documented and detailed by myself here on Tasmanian Times ( Here ) . The subject of Senator Abetz and his tax returns should prove a blockbuster for an opening address by a new entrant to that exclusive Club of Australian Senators. Such questions under privilege will give her and her party a political start for which they will be long remembered.
