The often controversial but much loved people’s priest, Father Bob Maguire, is heading to
Launceston TODAY in support of Marillac House, which provides accommodation for patients and
their carers who have to travel to the city for medical reasons.
Marillac House is an initiative of the St Vincent de Paul Society, assisting patients, carers and family
members in times of crisis and accommodating those undergoing surgery, hospital treatment,
emergency care or rehabilitation in a supportive and caring environment.
Father Bob was finally forced to retire in 2012 from his role as priest at St Peter’s and Paul’s Church
in South Melbourne at the age of 77. His last church service was reported as ‘standing room only’
with an attendance of around 1,000 people. Maguire remains active within the community,
including his work with Open Family which he co- founded in 1978 and as President of the Bob
Maguire Foundation. Since 2003 the Father Bob Maguire Foundation has worked tirelessly to feed
the hungry and house the homeless.
Father Bob is making the trip to Tasmania as the guest speaker of the inaugural Marillac House
cocktail party, which is the culmination of over a year’s hard work by a small group of dedicated
volunteers who came together through the 2012 Tasmanian Leaders Program.
The Marillac House cocktail party will be held on Friday, 6 September from 5.30pm at QVMAG in
Inveresk, Launceston. Tickets are $65 each or two for $120 and can be purchased by contacting
Jennifer at Marillac House on (03) 6331 0405 or by email at [email protected].
All funds raised will go towards assisting Marillac House to carry out much needed work to upgrade
facilities in the house, including making sure at least two of the bathrooms have disabled access.
