Coalition must deliver on Tamar health

Posted on

The Tasmanian Greens Member for Bass Kim Booth has written to the newly elected Federal Member for Bass, Andrew Nikolic, seeking a clear timeline for the rollout of commitments to improve the health of the Tamar River.

“The Greens are cautiously welcoming the Coalition’s commitments to improve the health of the Tamar River, but whether these turns out to be empty promises will depend on Mr Nikolic,” Mr Booth said.

“What we need is a clear timeline for the delivery of these projects, and in particular we need to see action right away to stop the release of sewerage into the Tamar River.”

“The Greens will not stand by and let the health of the Tamar River and those who live along it continue to be ignored, or just used as a periodic political football whenever there is an election. Those who may have been elected of the back of the Tamar’s plight, now have a responsibility to act.”

“The health of Tamar River is a serious environmental, economic and health issue for Northern Tasmania, so I hope this is an issue where we can work with tripartite support.

“The Greens also support unlocking the full Meander Dam environmental flow to improve the Cataract Gorge, as well as a Catchment to Coast Authority and finally.

“We also committed to provide $250, 000 in public funds to develop an action plan to stop sewerage from entering the Tamar River.”
