But Still Hope for TFA

The Tasmanian Greens today said that the federal Labor party have breached the Tasmanian Forests Intergovernmental Agreement by announcing that the economic stimulus money allocated in the Agreement will no longer be dependent on the delivery of Reserves through the Tasmanian parliament.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said the announcement shows that Kevin Rudd cannot be trusted on the environment, but that it did not necessarily signal the demise of the Reserves in the Upper House.

“People from both sides of the debate have worked extremely hard to deliver meaningful conservation and economic diversification outcomes, and these remain achievable despite federal Labor’s breach of its own agreement,” said Mr McKim.

“Mr Rudd and his federal Labor colleagues clearly cannot be trusted on the environment, just as they cannot be trusted to show compassion for asylum seekers or properly fund the tertiary sector.”

“The opportunity still exists for the Legislative Council to vote in the best interests of Tasmania and pass the Reserve Order currently before it,” Mr McKim said.
