Island, Tasmania’s only literary and culture magazine will launch its 134th issue in both the North and South of the state in September.

Author, historian and founder of the Beaconsfield Festival of Golden Words ( http://www.festivalofgoldenwords.com.au/ ), Stephen Dando Collins is launching Island in the Launceston art space, Sawtooth ARI ( http://sawtooth.org.au/ ) on Saturday, September 21st at 2pm.

The Hobart launch will take place at the Moonah Arts Centre on Sunday, 22nd September at 2pm. This event will also feature the announcement of the winner of one of Australia’s most pretigious poetry competitions, the Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize, which is generously sponsored by the Hobart Bookshop. The winner will be announced by Gig Ryan, Poetry Editor for The Age newspaper and judge of the competition alongside Island’s poetry editor John Kinsella, who has recently been awarded the Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Poetry.

Issue 134 of the magazine features a profile on living Tasmanian legend, painter Max Angus, an interview with author Nigel Featherstone, new fiction from Heather Rose, Anica Boulanger Mashberg and Tadhg Muller, who is definitely ‘one to watch’. The issue also contains exciting new poetry and a profile piece of enigmatic literary character, D’Arcy D’Oliveres.

The magazine, which recently received triennial funding from the Australia Council is going from strength to strength and these launches will also provide an opportunity to meet editor Matthew Lamb.

These events are free – although Island requests that RSVPs are made for catering purposes.
