Overdose Awareness Day has been a key remembrance day for those who have died from fatal drug overdoses since 2001. On August 31 thousands of people worldwide will stand alongside their friends and families to reflect upon the lives of those who have been lost as the result of a drug overdose. The event is organized on the understanding that no-one need feel shame or disgrace because of drug overdose.
Overdose Awareness Day offers all who have been affected by overdose a chance to publicly mourn and to help draw attention in the wider community that overdose profoundly affects a diverse range of people in our society. The day also serves as a reminder that not only illicit drugs can be dangerous but prescription medications can also be lethal.
As a key provider of Alcohol and other Drug Education Services, The Drug Education Network works directly with the wider community to ensure that people are aware of the impacts of alcohol and other drug use and the devastating consequences of overdose.
The key message is that overdose is preventable. Unnecessary injury and loss of life is achievable if we take action now.
The Drug Education Network, with support from the Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs Council of Tasmania will be present in the Elizabeth Street Mall on Friday 30th August 2013 between 11am – 2pm to talk with people and provide information and resources. They will also be launching the Save a Life overdose prevention wallet card which contains information about how to avoid overdose and what to do if you are concerned a person has overdosed.
