The Tasmanian Greens today congratulated former IBF Middleweight Champion and local Launceston hero, Daniel Geale, on his achievements in international boxing.
Greens Member for Bass, Kim Booth MP, said it was important to acknowledge Mr Geale’s stellar career thus far, including his rise from a suburban boxing club to competing at both the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, as well as professionally on the international stage.
“Although Mr Geale was unfortunately defeated in a very close fight on Sunday, I was impressed by both his graciousness in defeat, as well as his humility in his times of triumph,” Mr Booth said.
“Mr Geale is a fantastic statesman and his pride in his family heritage and humble beginnings are personality traits we should all strive to emulate. What a true sportsman he is and a wonderful role model to youth in this State and nationally,” said Mr Booth.

Kim Booth MP on tomorrow to move –
That this House;
1. Recognises and congratulates Launceston’s own hero Daniel Geale on his achievements in international boxing, despite his loss to new IBF Middleweight Champion Darren Barker in a very close fight on the weekend;
2. Congratulates Mr Geale on his boxing achievements thus far, including competing in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, securing gold for Australia at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and of course, until recently holding the IBF Middleweight Championship Belt;
3. Recognises Mr Geale’s Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage and proud but modest way in which he values his family history;
4. Recognises Mr Geale’s true fighting spirit and the humble background from which he rose to become one of Australia’s greatest ever boxing champions;
5. Congratulates Mr Geale on his humility and modesty in triumph, and his sportsmanship in defeat; and
Further, that this House:
6. Recognises Mr Geale as the statesman and fantastic role model he is for young and aspiring sports people in Launceston, around the State and indeed Australia wide.
