Marriage is a bedrock institution that protects children said Mr Guy Barnett, Spokesperson for the Save Marriage Coalition at the commencement of the federal election campaign.

“The Save Marriage Coalition will encourage voters to support those candidates who back marriage being between a man and a woman as defined in the Federal Marriage Act.

Same-sex marriage denies a child the right to both a mum and a dad.

“Children deserve the best possible chance in life and we are willing to fight for this. As a Senator I chaired the Senate committee looking into donor conception practices in 2011, so I know all too well the pain experienced by many donor conceived children who have had their biological identity tampered with.

“The general public are tired of the issue of same-sex marriage and it is not an election priority. The economy is the number one issue.

“This was clearly seen in Tasmania in May’s upper house elections where, even after spending big with the support of the ‘Get-up’ campaign, the gay lobby’s push to elect candidates supportive of same-sex marriage was soundly defeated in all three seats.

“The gay lobby refuse to support a referendum on the marriage issue. They are running scared of the silent majority.

“The gay lobby campaign during the federal election confirms again it is a federal issue and not a matter for the state Parliament.

“Marriage is an institution that has been around for thousands of years. It is not a fashion to be updated.

“Redefining marriage can only disadvantage our children and we stand ready to share our views and stand up for future Tasmanians,” Mr Barnett concluded.
