The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed an expected reduction of 5% in electricity prices next year as fantastic news for disadvantaged Tasmanians and job-creating business.
“The Greens made cost of living a central issue of our 2010 election campaign, and it is great to be part of delivering on our commitments,” Mr McKim said.
“The reforms that will help drive down electricity prices are happening in large part because the Greens drove the establishment of the Independent Energy Expert Panel in 2010.”
“Not only will this make a real difference for thousands of Tasmanians struggling with electricity Bills, but it will free up capital for small businesses to invest in job creation.”
“This result is in addition to $17.5m investment into energy efficiency during this term of government, which has delivered 9500 upgrades for low income Tasmanians resulting in a $300 per year decrease to the average electricity bill.”
“To reverse the double-digit power price increases of years gone by is a fantastic achievement, especially when electricity prices are skyrocketing in other parts of the country.”
Nick McKim, Greens Leader
