SUB MARINE DANCE PERFORMANCES – 11AM AND 2PM TODAY!
OGILVIE HIGH SCHOOL DANCE THEATRE
228 NEW TOWN ROAD, NEW TOWN
Sub Marine – Shining light into the depths is an innovative community engagement project aimed at improving comprehension and visibility of marine environments by making them more accessible through interactive performing arts. Taking place in Hobart, Tasmania in early August, Sub Marine invites locals to experience the intersection of science and contemporary dance, either as audience member or as a keen performer themselves.
Leading Australian contemporary dance choreographer, Dean Walsh, will conduct a series of creative workshops with community participants culminating in three informal public performances at Ogilvie Dance Studio in Hobart, during National Science Week.
During the workshops, Walsh will utilise his choreographic referencing system, Prime : Orderly, to develop a 30 – 45 minute multi-media contemporary performance work that involves dance and text, and informing audience on local marine environments and their intersection with human movement.
Walsh’s choreographic system is inspired by the biological taxonomy that is used to classify organic life, and is comprised of four domains, twenty-five primary movement scores, and almost one hundred physical modulations. A unique field in Australian performing arts practice, in 2011 Walsh received a two-year Dance Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts to support his research.
Preceding the performance of Sub Marine, Walsh will conduct schools workshops in the Hobart area, integrating his research and movement methods. Working closely with the Woodbridge Marine Discovery Centre to deepen his understanding of local issues, Walsh also aims to link with the local scuba diving community to share his research and improve his knowledge of local waterways and marine environments.
