A statement regarding increased cattle exports to Indonesia ( The World Today: Indonesia opens gates to more live cattle exports )

“I am deeply disappointed in the agreement between Canberra and Jakarta for increased cattle exports to Indonesia.

“Australia’s live animal export trade is systemically cruel and not in our economic self-interest. The Australian Government should be trying to wind it up, not grow it.

“This is a cynical move by the new Prime Minister to neutralise another controversial issue. But in this case he is completely misreading majority public opinion which is in favour of ending the live trade rather than promoting it.”
