Island funding from the Australia Council
Rachel Edwards Island Magazine
Island magazine, the only literary and cultural magazine published in Tasmania has been offered triennial funding from the Australia Council.
This offer ensures a strong future for the magazine which has been a major player in the Tasmanian literary landscape for 35 years and also extremely prominent in the Australian literary scene.
The magazine, currently edited by Dr Matthew Lamb publishes a diverse range of essays, poetry, fiction and visual art also has a very active online presence under the banner Islandia.
Island was launched under the banner of ‘The Tasmanian Review’ in 1979 by Andrew Sant, Michael Denholm and Tim Thorne and has consistently published the best writing from Tasmania alongside literary luminaries from around the world.
Island has recently introduced an artistic program that builds on the rich literary culture in the state and offers opportunities for both writers and readers both here and interstate.
Currently, the Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize, now in its 18th year is accepting entries from around the world. http://islandmag.com/gwenharwood/
The magazine lost funding from the Tasmanian state government for 2012 which resulted in a complete reappraisal of the magazine’s relevance and importance in the Australian cultural landscape.
Obviously too good to lose, the magazine now enters another exciting chapter in its role as navigator of new and challenging ground in the Australian literary landscape.
