The Tasmanian Greens Economic Development spokesperson Tim Morris MP said the forthcoming closure of ACL Bearing in Launceston and Australian Weaving Mills in Devonport was a sad blow for the workers and their families.
“The Greens are saddened at news of closure of these two Tasmanian manufacturers, which we know will be a terrible blow for the workers and their families,” Mr Morris said.
“It’s a confronting reminder of the big challenges Tasmania faces in reinventing and rebuilding our economy.”
“Unfortunately, there are a still a number of businesses operating in Tasmania that remain uncompetitive and highly exposed to pressures from interstate and overseas.”
“It highlights the urgent need to shift our economy away from uncompetitive, subsidised industries and into diversified industries where Tasmania enjoys a competitive advantage.”
“There are lots of businesses out there that want to expand, and will be competitive, but just need some start-up assistance from government, and we have to find the resources to make this a reality.”
“The current rate of unemployment in Tasmania is not acceptable to the Greens, but there is no value in subsidising uncompetitive businesses at the expense of getting new, more competitive businesses up and running.”
