Greens release “Tasmania 2030” vision for a green, dynamic, and prosperous economy

Today Senator Peter Whish-Wilson was joined by Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne and Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim to launch “Tasmania 2030” a vision for a green, dynamic, and prosperous economy.

Senator Whish-Wilson says the Greens are the only party with a long term vision for Tasmania’s economic future.

“The Greens are economy builders with a vision for continuing the long term economic transition currently underway in Tasmania,” Senator Peter Whish-Wilson said.

“We have a responsibility to deliver a future for our kids including sustainable jobs and industries.

“As a party we are not afraid of change and we have the conviction to face the challenges of climate change and globalisation and what they will mean for Tasmania.

“The Greens have predicted and consistently promoted the current transition in the Tasmanian economy since the Green Independents’ 1992 ‘Business & Industry Strategy’ report.

“I challenge my Senate counterparts to debate our visions for the prosperity of Tasmania,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.

The Tasmanian Greens Leader Nick McKim said Tasmania was ideally positioned to take advantage of the shift to a low carbon, high-skilled and creative economy.

“In the early 1990s the Greens saw a future for Tasmania built on environmental protection, clean air, clean water and wilderness conservation,” Mr McKim said.

“Back then the vision of a clean, green and clever Tasmania was considered radical, but today it is economic orthodoxy.

“Twenty years after Christine Milne gave us clean, green and clever, today the Tasmanian Greens are rolling up our sleeves in a power sharing parliament to deliver on this vision.

“Right now the world is in the midst of a climate crisis and an information technology revolution, and here in Tasmania we are almost uniquely positioned to take advantage of these changes.

“We have what the world wants, and what the world will increasingly be prepared to pay for.

“We are already starting to see the tremendous economic opportunities that flow from the shift to a low-carbon, high-skilled economy.

“We have the first Green Climate Change Minister in the country driving energy efficiency reforms and climate adaptation strategies, and fundamental reforms taking place in industry sectors like forestry and energy,” Mr. McKim concluded.
