Give Voice to Afghan Women

Members of the Amnesty International Australia’sUrban Group are showing their support for Afghan women’s rights in a series of actionsthis year and the latest event is a silent vigil at the Amnesty stall at Salamanca Market on Saturday 13th July at 11am

The Urban group is among a growing number of Australians who as part of Amnesty Internationals’ Afghanistan Women’s Rights Campaign are hosting events over the Fortnight of Action (1-14 July) to ensure that women’s rights are not traded away during Afghanistan’s peace negotiations and that supporting Afghan women is at the front and centre of Australia’s commitments.

“Right now is our chance to ensure that women’s rights are protected,” said Yabbo Thompson, Co-Convener of Amnesty’s Urban Group.

“Amnesty International is calling on Australia, the international community and the Afghan Government to ensure women are central to peace and reconciliation negotiations, have meaningful political representation, have strengthened capacity in public life and have their safety and human rights protected.

“We are encouraging people to join us and take action on women’s rights in Afghanistan by signing the Petition and by being a part of a human rights movement,” Yabbosaid.
