… AFTER NSW REPORT SAYS NO CONSTITUTIONAL IMPEDIMENT
Tasmanian marriage equality advocates have welcomed a NSW parliament report which clears the way for states to enact same-sex marriage laws.
A NSW parliament inquiry released today says states have the constitutional power to enact state same-sex marriage laws, leaving the door open for such legislation to be revisited in Tasmania.
Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality spokesperson, Jackson Tegg, said,
“The NSW report explodes the myth that a state same-sex marriage law is unconstitutional, and opens the door to revisiting the Tasmanian bill.”
“We will now seek meetings with Upper House members, and the Liberal Party, to urge support for Tasmania taking the lead on a reform that is good for couples, good for families and good for the economy.”
“We would like to see the Bill brought back sooner rather than later.”
Last year, Australia’s first same-sex marriage bill was defeated by two votes in the Tasmanian Upper House with members expressing concern the move was unconstitutional.
The Liberal Party opposed the bill on the basis that it was unconstitutional.
