The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed reported moves by Huon Aquaculture to rollout seal-proof nets as an alternative to current seal management practices.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the Greens remained concerned over reports of widespread seal deaths on Tasmanian salmon farms, urging an industry-wide rollout of the new nets.
“We are concerned about both the animal welfare issues associated with current seal management practices and the brand damage that might result,” Mr McKim said.
“Aquaculture is a significant and expanding sector of our state’s economy, and it is heavily reliant on Tasmania’s clean and green brand for its marketing.”
“These great Tasmanian products are the toast of chefs around the world, and the last thing we want to do is risk their premium position in the marketplace.”
“We strongly welcome moves by Huon Aquaculture to introduce seal proof nets, and we urge the state’s other operators to follow this example.”
“This could be a win-win for the industry, not just benefiting the welfare of the seals but helping to reduce lost revenue while avoiding a consumer backlash.”
