Yellow Point 2012 Bloody 11th Pinot Noir
Region: D’Entrecasteaux Channel TAS | $25
This was fashioned by Julian Alcorso of Winemaking Tasmania from grapes grown by the Bastick family on their Yellow Point Vineyard at Birchs Bay.
The vineyard was the site of an early convict settlement and signal station manned at one stage by the legendary North Devonshire 11th Battalion of Foot, which had gained its ‘Bloody 11th’ nickname at the Battle of Salamanca.
The wine’s bouquet is redolent of black cherries, with similar flavours rolling onto the palate, which is tightly structured and only light-to-medium-bodied in weight. But please don’t take that as a suggestion that the wine lacks body. In fact, as has been shown in recent years at the Sydney International Wine Competition, which judges wines in conjunction with appropriately weighted food, it is often the lighter-bodied reds that perform much better than the heavyweights.
This is very attractive drinking and an excellent wine to take along to your favourite Italian bistro.
