Tasmania’s peak tourism body has welcomed the State Opposition’s decisive approach to enhancing the tourism experience on Mt Wellington.
Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO Luke Martin, said today development on Mt Wellington was such a contentious and sensitive issue in the community, that it requires decisive leadership and vision from our political leaders.
“The Tasmanian community is sick to death of the never ending debate and lack of action on Mt Wellington,” Mr Martin said.
“Whether you like the idea of a cable car or not, I think the vast majority of Tasmanians can agree the public facilities and visitor experience on top of Mt Wellington does not do the natural environment justice or enhance Hobart’s reputation as a world class visitor destination.”
“Frankly the existing visitor shelter and public facilities on the summit are embarrassing and an indictment on us as a State.”
“We welcome the State Opposition showing political leadership on the Mountain and not just leave it to the Mount Wellington Management Trust to release another management plan based on the same cumbersome and anti-development principles of its Management Plans over the last twenty years.”
“We would welcome either side of politics going further by committing to a comprehensive review of the tenure and management of the Mountain Park to consider whether it would be more appropriate under the management of Parks & Wildlife or the Hobart City Council.”
