On the eve of North Melbourne’s second home clash against Port Adelaide at Blundstone Arena
for 2013, RACT is urging football fans to throw their support behind the RACT Community Cup,
a community football initiative to be played as a curtain raiser to the main event on Saturday
afternoon.
Now into its second year, the RACT Community Cup will be contested by teams from the
Police-Citizens Youth Club’s (PCYC) GLAM – ‘Gotta Look After Me’ program, which builds selfesteem,
confidence and resilience in young women from low socio-economic regions.
RACT Spokesperson Trent Sayers said the organisation had been working closely with the
Launceston and Bridgewater PCYCs (who will field teams in the match), as well as AFL Sports
Ready in coordinating the event.
“It is fantastic for these girls to get the opportunity to play in front of thousands of avid footy fans
on one of the biggest stages in Australian sport,” Mr Sayers said.
“I would urge all fans attending the North Melbourne game to get to the ground early and throw
their support behind this great initiative.
“To see the evolution of the RACT Community Cup since last year’s inaugural match is very
rewarding and is a testament to the hard work and effort of all those involved in the program.”
Bridgewater PCYC Family Liaison Worker Leah Clark said the girls from the Bridgewater team
were excited and ready for the big day.
“We had a bit of a kick around with some of the North Melbourne boys during their last visit to
Hobart, which was a fantastic experience for the girls and one they will remember for a long
time,” Ms Clark said.
“The majority of the girls involved are young mothers and girls living on ‘the edge’, and I
honestly believe this will be a life-changing experience and create new possibilities for their
futures.”
The 2013 RACT Community Cup clash between the Launceston Pink Panthers and the
Bridgewater Bluebirds starts at 12.10pm, Saturday 4 May at Blundstone Arena, with North
Melbourne v Port Adelaide kicking off at 2.10pm.
