Art leaves lasting legacy for family
The Rosny Schoolhouse Gallery came to life today, with creative works ranging from mixed
media, drawings, video art, built objects, fibre art and ceramics, providing an avenue for
expression for Tasmanians with intellectual disabilities.
One of the exhibitions’ most treasured pieces is an artwork by recently deceased Cosmos
client Tara Shutt, whose twin sister flew to Tasmania to view her abstract 3D painting on
display at the Cosmos exhibition, Aspirations.
Tara’s mother, Nerrida Shutt, said it was wonderful that her family had so many beautiful
visual memories of Tara to treasure.
“Cosmos’ programs were invaluable for Tara, giving her an outlet to express her emotions
through art and music as well as social interaction with others in the program,” Mrs Shutt
said.
“Tara had been working on this painting for some time and was so excited to have it displayed
as part of Cosmos’s exhibition. We are so proud of Tara and all that she achieved.
“We would also love to acknowledge the talented staff at Cosmos that assist clients to
individually express themselves through the art classes.”
Cosmos CEO Catherine Viney said the annual exhibition was a standout on the Cosmos
calendar, allowing the organisation to showcase the incredible works created by Cosmos
clients.
“The public art exhibition displays not only the creative talents of Cosmos’ clients but also
aims to challenge community expectations of people with disabilities,” Ms Viney said.
“This exhibition is our chance to show the community what amazing creative talents people
with intellectual disabilities have and to start a positive conversation amongst the wider
community.”
The exhibition is free and open to all, with the works to be displayed at the Schoolhouse
Gallery at the Rosny Farm from Friday, 31 May – 16 June 2013.
The Rosny Farm is open to the public Tuesdays to Fridays between 11am-4pm and Saturdays
and Sundays from 12noon to 4pm. The Rosny Farm is located adjacent to the Eastlands
Shopping Centre with access off Bligh Street and Rosny Hill Road, Rosny Park.
