The AEU Tasmanian Branch welcomed the release of details about proposed Gonski funding arrangements and said Tasmania was set to be a big winner.

The Federal Government plan would see an additional $400 million of commonwealth money flow to Tasmanian schools over six years.

“The current school funding system is widely recognised as being inequitable and failing too many of our children,” said Terry Polglase, AEU Tasmanian Branch President.

“In Tasmania our public education system cannot, and will not, achieve the outcomes that governments continue to expect unless Gonski reforms are implemented.”

“A new school funding model that addresses disadvantage is imperative and it is for the Federal Government to determine how the Gonski reforms are funded.”
“One thing is for sure — the cost of inaction will be far higher than the cost of action.”

“The state tops the nation in nearly all measured areas of disadvantage and a new funding system that recognises each student’s level of need will be a game changer for public education in Tasmania,” Mr Polglase said.
