23 MILLION: MILESTONE OR MILLSTONE?

Australia is now growing by over 1,000 people per day: Stable Population Party

According to the ABS population clock, Australia’s population is now growing by over 1,000 people per day and will hit 23 million on Tuesday, 23 April. Our growth equates to over 1 million people every three years – that’s the size of Adelaide. Alternatively, it means a new Canberra every year. At 1.7 per cent growth, we are on target for 40 million by 2050 and 100 million in the lifetime of a child born today. By comparison, the world average is 1.1 per cent, with most developed nations well below this average.

This growth is despite recent research by Galaxy that shows an overwhelming 70 per cent of Australians reject ‘big Australia’ population growth of 40 million by 2050: http://www.news.com.au/national/can-there-be-too-many-australians/story-fncynjr2-1226560486122

“Population growth is already linked to all of Australia’s major problems. We need to start thinking better, not bigger, and dealing with the root cause of our issues. A stable population will help relieve overstretched infrastructure, ease cost of living pressures, protect our environment, promote education and training, and minimise high-rise and sprawl,” said William Bourke, President of the federally registered Stable Population Party.

“In 1994 the Australian Academy of Science published its findings on population. In considering the resource needs of our cities, and Australia’s supply of water, minerals and arable land it concluded: ‘In our view, the quality of all aspects of our children’s lives will be maximised if the population of Australia by the mid-21st Century is kept to the low, stable end of the achievable range, i.e. to approximately 23 million.’ Why have our governments ignored this advice and our primary moral responsibility, to pass on a sustainable Australia?

“‘Populate or perish’ has become ‘populate and perish’. The reality is, we won’t resolve any of Australia’s major problems until we first resolve the everything issue – population.

“We live in a finite world so can’t grow forever. Australians deserve a choice on population and therefore the sustainability of the environment, economy and quality of life we pass on to our children and grandchildren. At long last, that’s the choice that all Australians will get in the 2013 federal election through the Stable Population Party, with Senate candidates running in every state.

“Bring on the election, and bring on the question – big Australia or stable population? We’ll debate anyone, anywhere, including the Business Council of Australia, the Coalition, Labor or The Greens, who all push Australia’s unsustainable population explosion,” said Mr. Bourke.
