Saveoursolar.org has been formed to give a full independent voice for both consumers and those concerned with the solar business here in Tasmania.
Tasmania has a unique situation with feed-in tariffs in Australia. Unlike interstate Tasmania has no debt burden from feed-in tariffs; whereas mainland states have paid up to triple feed-in rates — with contracts to run.
Past solar system pricing won this enviable position for Tasmania.
Queensland will have an accumulated debt of some $1.2 billion by 2025, according to recent media reports.
So where Tasmanians seemed to lag, policy here has kept us free of such burdens.
Recent solar pricing does not need such support.
It does need “Free Parking”.
A free parking 1-1 feed-in tariff did not cost Aurora $10 million in feed-in last year as reported in mainstream media; merely a loss of turnover volume in support of Tasmania’s participation in this world wide socially warranted and desired solar trend.
Tasmanians may lose their 1-1 “free parking” feed-in tariff if we do not focus Government on understanding the full situation.
Tasmanians paid fully for their part of Tasmania’s communal solar farm. We are solely responsible for all ongoing maintenance etc — and paid GST which filters back to local government too.
By direct comparison, how much has the taxpayer paid to participate in local wind farms?
Current solar system owners will stand to lose a majority of their investment value if “free parking” is abandoned.
Some could even lose their homes.
A poor decision could be catastrophic for the solar industry; thousands of jobs direct and indirect, livelihoods, and also all current owners of solar will have their return on investment ruined.
