Today the Tasmanian Legislative Council drove a bulldozer through key clauses of the Tasmanian forest peace deal, the Australian Greens said today.
“Australians will be shocked to learn that the forest peace deal achieved after years of negotiation has just been gutted in total defiance of the intergovernmental agreement (IGA),” Australian Greens Leader Senator Christine Milne said.
“The Legislative Council has pushed back the dates for securing reserves in a clear move by them and the Liberal party to wait for a new Abbott federal government which will destroy any hope of protecting Tasmanian forests.
“Furthermore, the Legislative Council has voted to remove a significant area from the reserve agenda that was agreed to by all the signatories.
“Make no mistake the Tasmanian Legislative Council are wreckers.”
