ABC: Fresh commitment to regional Australians

Posted on

Friends of the ABC Tasmania has welcomed the ABC Board’s decision to meet in Launceston this week.

The city first hosted an ABC Board meeting in the 1950s when Former Launceston Mayor Dorothy Edwards served as a Board Member.

President of FABC Tas Margaret Reynolds said the Board meeting signalled a fresh commitment to regional Australians who were avid
supporters of the national broadcaster.

Recent decisions to concentrate ABC television production in Sydney and Melbourne had resulted in the closure of Tasmania’s respected film production unit.

However the recent appointment of a Tasmanian TV Producer was an indication of some recognition of the importance of localism in developing Australian content.

FABC Tas will ask ABC Board members to monitor recommendations made in the recent Senate Committee Report which highlighted the need for the ABC to work more closely with regional communities in producing Australian television which reflects the diversity of the nation.
