Cyclists from around Tasmania will fly out of the State today bound for Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City for an
amazing 400km adventure in support of Diabetes Tasmania.
The group of 27 cyclists will be led by volunteer diabetes educator Caroline van Riet, who is one of five
members of the team with diabetes set to travel around South-East Asia.
Diabetes Tasmania CEO Caroline Wells said she was proud of the team’s dedication, which would enable
the organisation to donate medical supplies to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.
“It is great to have these people come forward and support those with diabetes in Tasmania as well as to
provide a large quantity of medical supplies to those in need in a developing country,” said Ms Wells.
“The supplies are for children living with type 1 diabetes, which can be life-threatening, and we hope it
will assist them in managing their condition.”
Diabetes Tasmania Fundraising Manager Carmen Jenkinson said the team had already achieved a great
outcome, so far raising $30,000 for people with diabetes around the State.
“Not only have they raised a tremendous amount for the 25,000 Tasmanians with diabetes, they are
supporting those in developing countries who currently live with the disease,” she said.
“In addition, 10 per cent of all proceeds raised will be donated to the Life for a Child program, which
provides life-saving insulin to children in developing countries.
“We hope to see more donations come in as the progress of the team is tracked on Facebook.”
The team departs from Hobart later today. You can follow their progress and make a donation via
