Today’s stormwater contamination from Midway Point and the subsequent closure of two nearby fisheries is a warning for the South-East Seafood and Oyster Industry according to Southern Beaches Conservation Society president Angela Marsh.
“The Department of Health has temporarily closed down two fisheries due to pollution from a stormwater drain costing them thousands of dollars in lost sales. Fortunately in this case
stormwater pollution is not permanent. But if a Hazardous Waste C-cell alongside the Carlton River proceeds then a toxic spill could contaminate our waterways forever.” “If Sorell Council don’t stop the C-Cell, our fishing industries are sitting on a toxic time bomb.”
According to Ms Marsh, “Southern Waste Solutions (SWS) like to point out that Melbourne has a ‘harmless’ toxic dump sitting on the city’s outskirts. If it is so harmless then why are
residents suffering from extreme health problems – especially if they went near a creek that runs alongside the dump.” ( www.abc.net.au/news/2010-05-13/waste-tip-blamed-forcancers-birth-defects/434070 and www.tullatoxicdump.net/new2/ )
“Sound familiar? Sorell Council and SWS plan to build a C-Cell 200 metres from a Carlton River creek/tributary and 800 metres from the actual river. This huge repository of hazardous material will be located only 10 kilometres from where the Carlton River terminates into Frederick Henry Bay at Carlton Beach – risking permanent disaster for fishing, boating and recreation.”
“Tell Sorell Council not to build us a Toxic Timebomb!”
