TEN DAYS OPENS WITH ACCLAIMED THEATRE WORK FROM NEW YORK

The seventh Ten Days on the Island international arts festival will open tomorrow night with a performance from

one of the most sought after and acclaimed theatre companies in the world, Elevator Repair Service (ERS).

From New York City, Elevator Repair Service will present an Australian premiere of The Select (The Sun Also Rises)

based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway.

After months of negotiations, millions of work hours, thousands of emails, hundreds of meetings, and plenty of

sweat, Artistic Director Jo Duffy says she is thrilled and excited to be poised ready for opening night.

“We have looked forward to this night for so long and I feel sure people will absolutely love this show, which has

been a sell-out at many of the most prestigious arts festivals around the world,” Ms Duffy said.

“It is an absolute coup for Hobart to have this company in the State with this particular show, which is one of a

scale we don’t often see in Tasmania.”

The winner of numerous awards worldwide, The Select (The Sun Also Rises) follows a group of decadent,

hedonistic and disillusioned young expatriates as they drift from post-war Paris to Spain.

Artists arriving for Ten Days on the Island will continue to touch down at Tasmanian airports over the next ten

days, arriving from as far afield as Scotland, Cape Breton, Corsica, Malaysia and Ireland.

Other international artists travelling to Tasmania for Ten Days on the Island include a hand-picked array of

world-leading musicians, who will arrive from different corners of the northern hemisphere, including the

world’s best-loved folk musician Dougie MacLean from Scotland, the world-leading a capella choir A Filetta from

Corsica, and the Cape Breton Island band Sprag Session, to perform their unique contemporary Celtic tunes.

Additionally, British aerial artists Ockham’s Razor will bring their spectacular acrobatic mid-air performances to

Tasmanian audiences. Other festival inclusions include Live! At the Riviera – a contemporary recreation of the

1940s big-band experience; Grace Barbé – sultry, exotic singer-songwriter from the Seychelles; The Other

Journey – a collection of travellers’ experiences from Sri Lanka; Finding Centre – a solo dance work from

Tasmanian artist Trisha Dunn; and MURDER – inspired by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds’ Murder Ballads.
