Property Council welcomes population target
The Property Council of Australia, Tasmania Division has welcomed the recognition for the need to grow Tasmania’s population by the setting of a target of 650,000 by 2050. ( Mercury: Let’s go for a million … )
Tasmanian Executive Director, Mary Massina said not since 2010 and the last paper from the Tasmanian Government’s Demographic Advisory Council has there been any further discussion about population growth.
“The issue of growing our population in a sustained way is important to the State’s future,” Ms Massina said.
“It is good see recognition of the need to address this issue by the Liberals and setting a target provides a benchmark to assess the success or failure of any policy.
“The property industry views population growth as crucially important to the economic health of our State and the jobs of some 40,000 Tasmanians who work directly and indirectly in the industry.
“Let’s hope that elected members of all colours and the wider community can have a mature discussion about this issue, so that as a State we can more forward.”
Ms Massina said the next challenge is to see the detail of how this will be achieved.
