Bruny: 3-Day Indigenous Music, Arts and Culture festival
BRUNY ISLAND TASMANIA
3-Day Indigenous Music, Arts and Culture festival
Featuring XAVIER RUDD, OKA, EMMA DONOVAN
Nayri Niara means Good Spirit! Tasmania’s stunning Bruny Island (Lunawanna alonnah) will
be signing, dancing, weaving, talking and celebrating the good spirit of aboriginal culture,
innovation, healing and the arts at a three-day festival on April 5 -7, 2013.
It is a family friendly, outdoor camping festival held in a tranquil bushland setting
overlooking Bruny Island’s Great Bay.
Naryri Niara is both a meeting place for Indigenous people to share their knowledge and
ceremony and, for all people to share their story – around the campfire, on the dance
floor, sharing a traditional kup-muri feed or in a workshop – Naryri Niara promises Good
Music, Good Food, Good Yarns, Good Vibes!
MUSIC
The Program features internationally travelled musicians and guests – From the thought
provoking, foot stamping tunes of Xavier Rudd, the smooth and soulful Emma Donovan,
the Pacific inspired beats of Bobby Alu, OKA’s electrified Didgeridoo and balladeer, Deline
Briscoe as well as Tasmanian’s own Dewayne Everettsmith and other local talent.
KNOWLEDGE
The theme for speaker’s forums is “Re-Claiming the Sacred Self.” Bob Randall, an elder
from Uluru, will share his intimate knowledge of ‘Kanyini’. Miriam Rose Ungunmerr from the
Northern Territory will speak about “Dadirri-Listening to one another” and Ngangkerre
(Traditional Healers) from the Akeyulerre Healing Centre in Alice Springs will share their
local Bush Medicines.
ARTS
There will also be films, Movement & Healing with Sacred Sound, Kelp Weaving, Children’s
Creative Arts and Circus workshops, Men’s and Women’s healing Circles, Artist exhibitions
and traditional dance circles.
The Concluding Ceremony of the festival will be dedicated to healing the time of ‘Great
Death’ when whaling began in Tasmania. The ceremony will celebrate the reclaiming of
the waters by the whales and the festival audience will be invited to contribute and
participate in this special ceremony event.
