The Infrastructure Minister, David O’Byrne, today announced job security for staff of the West Coast Wilderness Railway.
The Tasmanian Government has reached in-principle agreement with the Federal Group to transfer Federal employees to the Abt Railway Corporation.
The government corporation will employ the workers while a new operator is sought.
“The Tasmanian Government’s committed to seeing the West Coast Wilderness Railway operating in the next summer tourist season,” Mr O’Byrne said.
“But workers don’t just need commitments – they need ongoing job security to protect their livelihoods. Today, we’re pleased to be providing it.
“While the railway’s tourism value is massive, we’re acutely aware of the direct human impact of the recent uncertainty – especially for railway staff.
“These committed and experienced people are crucial for the railway’s future.
“Their employment will be transferred under much the same conditions as they currently have,” he said.
The Minister for Tourism Scott Bacon said many workers on the West Coast Wilderness Railway had unique skills.
“Today’s announcement ensures those skills stay in the region, while a new operator is sought,” he said.
“This in-principle agreement is further evidence of our commitment to supporting tourism on the West Coast.”
The transfer agreement gives workers certainty well beyond April 30th, when the Federal Group stops running the railway.
“We’re hopeful of finalising a sustainable business model as soon as possible – allowing us to step-up the search for an operator,” Mr O’Byrne said.
“Today’s announcement again demonstrates our genuine commitment to the railway and workers.
“We won’t indulge the politics around this issue. Instead, we’ll do the very hard yards behind the scenes to give this railway, these workers, and west coast tourism a strong and secure future,” he said.
