Single Parent Action Group leads the charge with National Day of Action

“We won’t stay silent!”

As single parents begin to feel the impact of the Parenting Payment cuts, the new Single Parent Action Group has led the charge to bring affected parents and supporters together for a National Day of Action today.

Maree Adams one of the organisers of today’s Hobart rally says, “Many single parents are already juggling work, or studying as well as caring for their children full time. Those who are studying will have to defer or withdraw from their studies, while people who are already working will have to find additional work, while managing parenthood as well.”

“Our most important job is to care for and provide (at least the basics) for our children. We are unable to provide the basics now” she said.

“Today’s rally has brought everyone together across Australia and we want to tell the Government that these changes are simply not acceptable. We are outraged by the changes to Parenting Payment and we won’t stay silent!”

Australian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson who is attending the rally in Canberra today says, “The Greens strongly opposed this punitive approach to single parents, and will continue to do so.

“Even the ALP opposed Welfare to Work in 2006, but they’ve changed their position in order to make budget cuts in pursuit of a surplus” he concluded.

In Hobart people met at St Davids Park, Davey St at 10am, and then walked to Parliament Lawns for the rally.
