A cookbook written to raise money for Tasmania’s Devil Island Project has won an award in the Gourmand Charity and Fund-raising Section of an international competition.

‘A Devil of a Cookbook’. Written by Launceston chef and cookery writer Fiona Hoskin and published by Thermomix won the Australia-Pacific section of the competition and so entered the finals. The Gourmand World cookbook awards were held on Saturday night in Paris. All money raised by sales of the book go to supporting the Devil Island Project’s latest venture ‘The Thermomix Great Devil Wall of Tasmania’.in association with the Save the Tasmanian Devil Programme.

This involves building a 5 km barrier across the Freycinet peninsular and so rewilding the Freycinet National Park with disease free Devils.

The Devil of Cookbook features delightful natural images of Tasmania, local stories and Tasmanian recipes.

After just the first four months after publication, the book had raised $130,000.

The Devil Island Project was founded in 2008 by chief executive officer Bruce Englefield.

Today, the project is a partnership between the Save the Tasmanian Devil program and the state government.

Mr Englefield said plans were under way to build more Great Devil Walls of Tasmania including a 40 Kilometre barrier across the Woolnorth property in the states northwest where there are 600 disease free devils needing protection.

“The disease is spreading seven kilometres a year, we are running out of time,” he said.

The Chairman of the Devil Island Project, Kerry Finch, says Tasmania cannot afford to lose its Devils.

This book award will give publicity to the Devil Island project around the world, Mr Finch said.

“It will focus international attention on the plight of our Devils and our attempts to save them,” he said.

Tthis was the competition Fiona was up against—note the Michelle Obama name! Fiona won the Australia/Pacific region.
