Abt Railway closure plan a setback for the West Coast

Posted on

The Tasmanian Greens today said that the Federal Group’s plan to close the Abt Railway was a disappointing blow for the west coast community and tourism businesses.

Greens Tourism spokesperson Tim Morris MP urged the Minister for Tourism Scott Bacon MP and the Minister for Infrastructure David O’Byrne MP to work with the company to find viable options for keeping the railway open.

“The permanent closure of the West Coast Wilderness Railway would be a terrible setback for businesses in Queenstown and Strahan, so it’s important to explore all options for keeping it operating,” Mr Morris said.

“The Abt Railway has been a fantastic drawcard for the west coast, giving visitors a truly unique way to see our spectacular World Heritage Area from the inside.”

“Federal signed on to a 20 year commitment and local businesses would expect them to see that through.”

“Because the State Government retains ownership of the asset, we are urging both the Infrastructure and Tourism Minister to work with Federal Hotels to find a new operator, and to do so in a transparent manner.”

“We need to be pulling out all the stops to find opportunities to keep the Abt Railway running, and one of those options could involve some form of community ownership.”

“The Greens are committed to tourism as vital industry in Tasmania for delivering jobs and economic growth in regional areas.”
