For the time being, there is no need for more hay to be donated to farmers affected by the bushfires, the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association (TFGA) said today.
The collection depots, including those at Sorell and the Elwick Showgrounds, have enough hay to be distributed for the time being.
“People have been fantastic in their response,” TFGA chief executive Jan Davis said today.
“However, grain is the next item on the agenda. Farmers are looking for grain to feed to their animals. Any donations would be very welcome; and some grain buyers have already indicated they’ll be supporting this call.”
The TFGA is coordinating the emergency response services to support farmers in bushfire-affected areas. It has a database of the farmers and their needs; and a matching database of offers of assistance and donations. It covers fodder, agistment, stock workers, fencing materials and volunteers to fence and clear up etc.
“Where appropriate, we can pass that information on to other support groups such as BlazeAid and Landcare,” Ms Davis said.
The TFGA hotline number 1800 154 111 operates in Tasmania. People can also call on 03 6332 1800 or send an email.
Donations for farm-specific activities can be made to a special TFGA account (BSB: 037-608, account number 52-7272 or by credit card or cheque.)
