Evan Rolley – Tasmania’s forest chameleon [Part 1]
Evan Rolley
“There’s no denying what markets are informing you about. … the truth is our markets determine the products we can sell; not some theory; not some political hyperbole – the Markets determine what we can trade and sell.
“… the evidence that came today[Tuesday 27 November 2012] it’s not Governments that can guarantee markets. That is the truth. Governments cannot guarantee markets. Products in markets are guaranteed where you’ve built a social licence and where there’s certification for that product.”
“The agreement is with Environment Tas [ET], with the Australian Conservation Foundation [ACF] and with the Wilderness Society [TWS]. And on the evidence before us yesterday [Monday 26 November 2012] those groups have made commitments which we intend to trust. And we believe that sitting together; shoulder to shoulder on these matters in the markets, which is the undertaking that’s there in the agreement.”
“I mean they’ve said to us that they’ll stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us in the market. Now with that support, we think, this is the time to bury the old animosities; to work together and try and rebuild for the future of Tasmania… you know, a sus…, sustainable and positive industry.”
“If, in Tasmania, we don’t give this a chance for a new generation to come along in the environment movement and in the industry; who have sought to sit down and try and work out what the old guard haven’t been able to work out over 30 years. If we do not give this a chance, I think, we miss an opportunity.”
“We [Ta Ann] supported that process from the very beginning and we now believe that in the light of – you know – all that evidence in front of us, it is time for people to bury their old hatreds; their old animosity. It’s time for people to take this opportunity of compromise to work together for the future of Tasmania and it is time to give the peace a chance.”
“We’ve got to move away from this situation where people say: “It’s either my way or no way!” That’s the old autocratic style.”
“We have briefed both the Legislative Council members [Paul Harris for Huon and Ruth Forrest for Murchison] overnight who represent those electorates… we explained to them that we [Ta Ann] believe that this is the best chance for our company to be able to continue to operate; to re-invest and to diversify its markets. And we’re happy to sit down with those members – and with other members of the Legislative Council in the coming days and talk to them about this commercial situation that we face.
