All Australians are encouraged to pause this Sunday and remember those who have made the supreme sacrifice in defence our nation, Senator Stephen Parry said today.

The day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18) and one minute’s silence observed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month provides universal recognition of the sacrifice of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts, Senator Parry said.

“In 2012 we particularly remember the seven men who have died in Afghanistan and their families. For family and friends left behind, Remembrance Day is another day of sadness, reflection and remembrance.”

“More than 103,000 Australians have made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the values we stand for as Australians – freedom, tolerance and democracy”, Senator Parry said.

“I would encourage all Tasmanians to show their support for our veterans and their families by buying a poppy and wearing it proudly this Remembrance Day.”

“The red poppy, which bloomed so prolifically across the fields of northern France, where tens of thousands of brave young Australians lie in eternal silence today, is the international symbol of remembrance and Remembrance Day.”

“In Tasmania and around Australia, the sale of poppies assists the veteran and ex-service community to provide care, support and assistance to veterans, war widows and families.”

Senator Parry will mark Remembrance Day by attending the National Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, and will lay a wreath on the Stone of Remembrance in his role as Acting President of the Australian Senate.
