BOFA FILM FESTIVAL OFFERS UNIQUE UNDERWATER EXPERIENCE
One of the most extraordinary films showing at this week’s Tasmanian Breath of Fresh Air Film Festival at Inveresk will be screened, not in a cinema, but in the Launceston Planetarium.
For the three days of the BOFA Festival the Planetarium will move from the night skies to an amazing underwater world, with free screenings of Coral Rekindling Venus.
An unforgettable experience for adults and children, the film provides viewers an immersive 45 minute journey into a mysterious realm of fluorescent coral reefs, bioluminescent sea creatures and rare marine life. Coral Rekindling Venus reveals a complex community living in the oceans most threatened by climate change.
Acclaimed Australian installation artist Lynette Wallworth spent five years making this film on the coral reefs of Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.
Wallworth has created a work of mesmerising beauty about climate change and coral reefs, reminding us that we again face problems that cannot be solved by one nation acting alone, where the notion of co-operation “to the benefit of all humanity” still applies.
“My intent is to leave the audience with a sense of wonder for the complexity of the coral community and a deep-felt longing to see it survive,” she said.
The title refers to the first example of international co-operation, when nations ceased hostilities and worked together to observe the Transit of Venus, taking measurements that underpin navigation today.
This beautiful cinematic experience is set to the haunting music of artists including Aboriginal singer Garrumul, Antony and the Johnsons and Max Richter.
Coral Rekindling Venus will be screened FREE at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery Planetarium, Inveresk at 11am and 1pm daily Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 9-11.
